Many Native American tribes called Boulder, Colorado home long before the area was settled by non-natives. The Southern Arapaho tribe maintained a village here, and Cheyenne, Utes, Sioux, and Comanches were occasional visitors to the area. The first establishment by European settlers was made by prospectors searching for gold. In 1859, the Boulder City Town Company was organized. The town was laid out in 4,044 lots and could be purchased for $1,000 per lot. The price was later lowered to attract more takers and residents. Boulder City was part of the Nebraska Territory until the Congress created the territory of Colorado in 1861. Boulder developed as a base for miners and prospectors to purchase their equipment for mining and homesteading as well as an entertainment center providing gambling and drinking. In 1907, the town did away with saloons nine years before prohibition. The ban was lifted when Prohibition was repealed nationally in 1933.

Boulder is located in Boulder County, Colorado just north and west of the city of Denver in the north-central part of the state. It is located at the base of the rocky mountains where the mountains meet the plains. The city is a part of the Boulder Metropolitan Area. Boulder has a population of about 105,000 people making it the 11th most populous city in the state of Colorado and the 278th most populous city in the United States. Every year since 1979, Boulder has hosted a 10k run on Memorial Day. The Boulder brings in over 50,000 participants each year. Some walk, some run, some jog, some in wheelchairs. It is the 5th largest road races in the world and has the largest prize for a non-marathon road race.

Ever since 1983, hundreds head out to the Boulder Reservoir on New Year’s day for the annual polar bear plunge, and on Halloween, runners take to the streets wearing nothing but shoes on their feet and carved pumpkins on their heads for the Naked Pumpkin Run.
