The city of Evanston is an area located in the northeastern part of Illinois. Evanston traces its history to the period before 1830 when it was largely an uninhabited area with mainly swampy forests and wetlands. The Potawatomi Indians are the known people to have lived in this area before Europeans came to Evanston. The Potawatomi arrived in this area using the trails along the ridges and constructed semi-permanent settlements here. In 1836, French explorers arrived in this place and named it “Grosse Pointe” to mean a land jutting into Lake Michigan. For a long time, this area remained sparsely populated after the French explorers came. However, it was not until the early 1840s that the Europeans settlers came in and bought land for settlement and agriculture.
