Before European contact, the Ojibwa Native American settled in this area of Ann Arbor. Land speculators Elisha Rumsey and John Allen founded this city in 1824. Allen and Rumsey named this area for their wives who were both named Ann after buying more than 600 acres of land here. Three years later, this city became the seat of the county of Washtenaw and was incorporated in 1833.
