Columbia was originally home to the Native American tribes of Missouria and Osage who were part of the Mississippian culture before Europeans contact. The first European to come to this area was La Saille who came in 1678 and claimed the whole of Missouri for France as the indigenous people continued to live here. In 1818, a group of white settlers formed Smithton Land Company and purchased over 2000 acres of land about one mile away from what is currently Columbia. These settlers later moved out of the area because of lack of water and settled between Hinkson creeks and Flat Branch, which is the downtown district now, and they renamed it Columbia, which is a poetic personification of United States of America.
