Allentown is an area located in eastern part of Pennsylvania. The city here traces its history to the early 1700s when the first inhabitants were the Native American tribe of Lenape, which lived in the scrub oak wilderness where they hunted grouse, deer, and other game as well as fishing for trout. By 1736, much of this area was deeded to the Europeans who came here in exchange for buckles, shoes, shirts, scissors, needles, and rum. In 1762, William Allen who was a wealthy shipping merchant, Chief Justice of Province of Pennsylvania and the former mayor of Philadelphia city laid out this area as Northampton Town before the name was later changed to Allentown.

Today, Allentown has grown from a village area to a modern city situated in Lehigh County. The area here covers a total area of approximately 18 square miles and lies within the Lehigh Valley, which is bounded by Blue Mountain and South Mountain. This city is the Lehigh County Seat and is adjacent to counties such as Bucks, Carbon, Montgomery, Berks, Schuylkill, Northampton, and Berks. This area is home to more than 125,000 people making it Pennsylvania’s 3rd most populated city and the largest city in Lehigh Valley Metropolitan Area with a population of nearly 900,000 people. The average precipitation is approximately 46 inches per year, and the area receives even rainfall nearly in all months of the year. The wettest month is September with about 5 inches of rain while the driest month is February with about 3 inches of rainfall because most of the precipitation falls in the winter as snow.

This city also boasts PPL Building the tallest building here, Allen Art Museum, Allentown Symphony Hall, Baum School of Art, Liberty Bell Museum, Americus Hotel, Marriott Hotel, Miller Symphony Hall, and Lehigh County Historical Society as some of the landmarks here. Much of this city’s park system is courtesy of the efforts of Harry Clay Trexler who inspired the City Beautiful movement in the early 1900s. Some of the parks here created by Clay Trexler include West Park, Cedar Parkway, Trexler Park, Allentown Municipal Golf Course and Trout Nursery.
