Present day city of Springfield traces its history to the late 1810s when the first European settlers arrived in Illinois and settled here. The first original name of the city was Calhoun, which was the name of a previous South Carolina Senator known as John C. Calhoun. The first people to settle in this city were traders and trappers who arrived through Sangamon River. John Kelly, one of the first settlers of the city, built the first cabin in 1820. In 1821, Springfield at that time known as Calhoun was made the County seat of Sangamon County.
