Federal Way traces its history to the late 1800s when it began as a logging settlement that linked the community with the economic centers of Tacoma and Seattle. Although there were no Native American settlements in this area as at the time the white settlers came to Washington, however, the indigenous people living along White and Green rivers used to come to this area occasionally and camp here as they hunted and gathered food. This area was named for the highway that passes through it (now the Pacific Highway South or the Federal Highway U.S 99). This name was first used in 1929 by the establishment of the Federal Way School District. For much of this region’s early history, this area remained a rural area with few settlers. It began experiencing massive growth during the late 19th-century industrial revolution. As early at the1840s, Hudson’s Bay Company had already established a small trading post along the Indian trail that crossed this area. In the mid 20th century, this community featured several residential and commercial areas burgeoning on its landscape. During this time, it provided the homes for the Weyerhaeuser Executives and Boeing Engineers. Retail growth followed with the building of Sea-Tac Mall now the Commons at Federal Way that further boosted its economy.

Today, Federal Way has grown from a village area to a modern city located in the central-western part of the state of Washington in the county of King. This area borders Puget Sound is situated between Tacoma and Seattle and covers a total size of approximately 22.5 square miles. This area has a population of about 95,000 people making it the ninth largest city in the state.
