Before European contact, the Native American tribe of Puyallup was the first people to settle in the area of Tacoma. In 852, Nicolas Delin a Swedish settler constructed a sawmill that was powered by water from the creek near Commencement Bay. However, the settlement around this sawmill was abandoned during the Indian War, and in 1864 after the end of the war Job Carr a postmaster, land speculator, and civil war veteran built a cabin near the Commencement Bay that served as the post first permanent structure and post office in the region. This region adopted the name Tacoma after Mount Rainier, which was originally called Tahoma.

Today, Tacoma has grown from a village area to a modern city located in the western part of Washington in the County of Pierce where it is the county seat. This city is located on Puget Sound, covers a total size of 62.3 square miles, and borders the Seattle, Mountain Rainier National Park, and Olympia. The population of this city is about 220,000 people making the third largest city in Washington and the 2nd largest city in Puget Sound Area. This area has excellent road network and has interstate highways such as I-5 and I-705 crossing its landscape. This area is usually known as the “City of Destiny” because it was chosen as the western terminus of Northern Pacific Railroad where the rail meets the Commencement Bay, which serves as the Port of Tacoma. This Port of Tacoma is Washington State’s largest port and a center of international trade in the Pacific Coast region.

The wettest month is November with about 7 inches of rain while the driest month is July with less than an inch of rainfall.

This city has grown with time and recently was named by an online survey as the most livable area in the country. For recreation, this area has Point Defiance Park, Owen Beach, Fort Nisqually, Wright Park, Camp Six, Jefferson Park, Wapato Park, Frost Park, Titlow Beach, Marine Park, Jack Hyde Park, Led Davis Pier, Cummings Park, Old Town Dock and Hamilton Park. Also, there are several beaches in this area along Ruston Way where residents and visitors can spend quality family and friends time.
