Before the arrival of European settlers, a Native American village existing in what is known today as downtown Aurora. In the early 1800s, after the Black Hawk War, two men known as The McCarty Brothers arrived, taking ownership of both sides of the Fox River. The McCarty Brothers later sold their land to The Lake Brothers. The village of East Aurora, which existed on one side of the river was incorporated in 1845. The village of West Aurora, which existed on the other side, was formally organized in 1854. The two towns officially merged in 1857 and became known simply as Aurora.
